In-Depth Information
Even tourism regulations have been tightened, limiting the contact foreign tourists have
with Tibetans.
Cosmetic changes and tightened political controls are unlikely to solve the frustration
and resentment that runs deep in Tibet. As Tibetans increasingly feel their culture is under
threat and lack channels to air their grievances, their frustration and despair are being re-
flected in ever more desperate acts. The horrific series of recent Tibetan self-immolations
(more than 130 at the time of writing) demonstrates the hopelessness felt by many
Tibetans. The root causes remain unaddressed. The longest-lasting result of Tibet's eco-
nomic boom is clear though: the ties that bind China and Tibet are stronger than ever.
