Kagyud school, so there are pictures of Milarepa, Marpa and the Karmapa here (as well as
Chairman Mao!). The monastery is headed by a 91-year-old lama who fled to India in
1959 and returned in 1984 to rebuild the ruined monastery.
Zhari (Tsari) Nam-tso LAKE
One excursion from Tsochen is to Zhari (Tsari) Nam-tso, a huge salt lake 50km east to-
wards the town of Tseri (Tsitri). You will need to have this visit pre-arranged before leav-
ing Lhasa or arrange extra payment for the half-day trip.
Sleeping & Eating
The main street is lined with Chinese restaurants but don't expect to find an English menu.
There are several supermarkets in town.
Friendship Feria Hotel HOTEL

The hotel is at the beginning of town on the left, before the petrol station.
Lhatse Dronkhang HOTEL

Just past the Feria Hotel, this place has decent rooms on the 2nd floor. The walls are wood
so it's potentially noisy but there are indoor toilets and showers.
Lhatse Tashi Restaurant CHINESE, TIBETAN
(mains ¥10-30)
Opposite the Lhatse Dronkhang hotel, this restaurant is owned by the same people and of-
fers cosy Tibetan seating and a good range of Chinese and Tibetan dishes.
