All those hairpin bends can leave you spinning and upon first arrival it can be difficult
to figure out where you are, relative to everything else on your map. The best way to orient
yourself is to walk all the way downhill until you reach the Zhāngmù Hotel; within a few
minutes' walk back uphill you'll pass most of the hotels and restaurants reviewed by us.
Evening reveals the town's seedy side as its numerous downmarket discos, bars and
brothels open for business; a sort of Tijuana-in-miniature. With its Nepali goods and
thumping Bollywood soundtrack, the town feels more like a part of Nepal than anywhere
else, with only a few indications that you're still in Tibet.
