In-Depth Information
A brand new assembly hall surrounds the cave, which is just below the cave of Mil-
arepa's disciple Rechungpa. Milarepa's cave is 11km north of Nyalam, at Gangka village.
Sleeping
Between May and September Nyalam's hotels tend to get booked out with large groups of
Indian pilgrims headed to Mt Kailash, so it's worth phoning ahead to secure a reservation.
In general Nyalam's hotels are well overpriced.
Nyalam Nga-Dhon Guesthouse HOTEL
(, Nièlāmù Ādùn Lǚguǎn
827 2113; 2 Chongdui Lu; d without bathroom ¥100, d with bathroom
¥200-300)
This well-run Tibetan place is the best bet for budget travellers, with simple Tibetan-style
rooms with shared bathroom starting at ¥50 per bed. The pleasant attached restaurant has
an English menu and is a good bet (mains ¥25 to ¥35).
For ¥200, you will get a dark en-suite room in the side block with a squat toilet. The
best rooms overlook the main road and are clean and fresh with a Western bathroom.
New Snowlands Hotel HOTEL
(, Xuěyù Fàndiàn Nièlāmù 136 3892 0177; r with shared bathroom ¥280)
Prices at this modern hotel are over the top but the rooms are comfortable, with good mat-
tresses, and the shared sinks, Western toilets and hot showers down the hall are spotless
and modern. Ask for a higher floor room. Triples and doubles are the same price.
Nyalam Hotel HOTEL
(, Nièlāmù Bīnguǎn 827 9999; 28 Yantai Lu; d without/with bathroom ¥120/300)
The three-star Nyalam has fresh and modern carpeted rooms in the main roadside building.
The much simpler concrete rooms without bathroom in the grimmer back block are worth
avoiding.
Shishapangma Hotel HOTEL
(, Xīxiàbāngmǎ Bīnguăn
8277 2191; dm/tw ¥60/320)
