If you plan on eating at Wordo Kitchen - or even if you don't - don't miss heading upstairs
to this fascinating and totally unexpected private museum ( MAP

8992 0067; Wordo Kitchen, Zhade Donglu; admission ¥20, for restaurant customers ¥15;
9.30am-11pm). English speaker Kelsang does a great job of explaining the various exhibits,
from the original iron links from a Tangtong Gyelpo bridge to the old English pressure
cooker carried by porters over the Himalayas from Calcutta.
Look out for the Tibetan coins cut in half to provide change and the ornate saddle de-
constructed during the Cultural Revolution to protect its owners. Travellers will appreciate
the ancient Tibetan backpack.
Our favourites are the beauty implements designed to hang from a nomad woman's
chuba(long-sleeved sheepskin coat) including an ear scraper and eyebrow plucker, and
the karmic-related dice games that are a hit with local monks. The owner knows his stuff;
he was a monk in Tashilhunpo Monastery for eight years.
Sleeping
Shigatse has a good range of decent hotels, most with flush toilets and 24-hour hot water.

Right next to the carpet factory is this well-run hotel offering modern, recently renovated
Western-style rooms with comfortable beds and clean bathrooms with hot water. Each
room has its own wi-fi router. Dorm rooms give access to shared hot showers. Best of all
is the location, less than 100m from the entrance of the Tashilhunpo Monastery and next to
Shigatse's best restaurants.
