Shangbala Hotel HOTEL

)
This tour-group blockhouse was under major renovation in 2014. Expect upgraded facilit-
ies and the same superbly convenient location.
Mandala Hotel HOTEL
(, Mǎnzhāi Fàndiàn MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 636 7666; Jiangsu Lu; d/tr ¥280/400; )
This newish Tibetan-run three-star place, just south of the old town, is a modern hotel with
a few Tibetan touches. Rooms are comfortable but the wi-fi currently only works in the
lobby.
Shangri-La Hotel LUXURY HOTEL
(, Xiānggélǐlā Dàjiǔdiàn MAP

from ¥2488; )
It was really only a question of time before the Shangri-La brand opened their first hotel in
Tibet. The decor is modern and tasteful and there are fine restaurants, including an excel-
lent buffet and a 'Tibetan tapas bar' serving Yúnnánese snacks. Five-star facilities include a
gym, oxygen lounge and clinic, most likely in that order.
Other perks include a large swimming pool and spa, plus free magazines via an e-reader.
St Regis Lhasa LUXURY HOTEL
(, Ruìjídù Jiŭdiàn MAP

630 8888; www.stregis.com/lhasa ; 22 Jiangsu Lu; r from
¥3000; )
Six-star travellers accustomed to uberluxury, 24-hour butler service and, yes, a gold-plated
pool, can finally consider a trip to the plateau. If you have to ask the price, you can't afford
it. Proximity to the old town is an unexpected bonus. At least Richard Gere has a place to
stay, if he's ever allowed back into Tibet.
The fortresslike main building has three restaurants, a spa, tearoom and the largest se-
lection of wines in Tibet (although any collection of more than 10 bottles qualifies as this).
An expansion is scheduled for 2015.
