Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) was a contemporary of the postimpressionists, but his 'na-
ive' art was unaffected by them. His dreamlike pictures of the Paris suburbs and of jungle
and desert scenes (eg The Snake Charmer ) - again in Musée d'Orsay - have influenced art
right up to this century. The eerie treatment of mythological subjects by Gustave Moreau
(1826-98) can be seen in the artist's studio, now within the Musée Gustave-Moreau in the
9e.
