For the quietest night's sleep, go for a room facing the courtyard of this neat-as-a-pin budget
hotel. Its rooms all have en suite bathrooms and, for Paris, are decently sized (doubles from
14 sq metre), and staff are eager to please. The location, near Opéra, is fabulous.

A unique budget hotel, the Monte Carlo is a steal, with colourful, personalised rooms and a
great neighbourhood location. The owners go the extra mile and even provide a partly or-
ganic breakfast. The cheaper rooms don't have private bathroom facilities, but overall it out-
classes many of the other choices in its price range.

Dating from 1846, the 36-room Chopin is inside one of Paris' most delightful 19th-century
passages couverts
(covered shopping arcades). The rooms don't have much in the way of
personality (and the cheaper rooms are small and dark), but the belle époque location is
beautiful.

Clean rooms at this Bureau des Voyages de la Jeunesse (BVJ) hostel might be monastic but
that's negated by its fantastic location near the Palais Garnier and Grands Boulevards depart-
ment stores, and its 19th-century building opening to a cobbled courtyard. Breakfast is free
but, unusually these days, wi-fi isn't (per four hours €5). Cash only.
