The prized drawcard of tiny Giverny is the home and flower-filled garden of the semin-
al impressionist painter and his family from 1883 to 1926. Here Monet painted some
of his most famous series, including Décorations des Nymphéas (Water Lilies).
Monet's hectare of land encompasses two distinct areas, cut by the Chemin du Roy,
a small railway line that has been converted into the D5 road, but linked by a foot tun-
nel.

s Normand, with its symmetrically laid-out gardens bursting with flowers. Monet
bought the Jardin d'E
din d'Eau (Water Garden) in 1895 and set about creating his trademark
lily pond, as well as the famous Japanese bridge (since rebuilt). Draped with purple
wisteria, the bridge blends into the asymmetrical foreground and background, creat-
ing the intimate atmosphere for which the 'painter of light' was renowned.
The charmingly preserved house and beautiful bloom-filled gardens (rather than
Monet's works) are the attractions here.
