In-Depth Information
With a name like La Gauloise, you wouldn't expect this venerable, terrace-fronted restaurant
to serve anything other than traditional fare, which it does, very well. From the onion soup
to the braised stuffed cabbage and duckling with old-fashioned mashed potato, îles flottantes
for dessert, and Madeleine cakes with coffee, it refines but doesn't reinvent the classics that
make French cuisine iconic.

Timeless Thai dishes are artfully presented and utterly delicious at this airy, uncluttered
space in a very local neighbourhood. Desserts like mango and coconut rice are especially
good; kids are warmly welcomed.

The reason for visiting this enormous, 450-seat brasserie, designed by the Solvet brothers
and opened in 1927, is more history than gastronomy. Its famous mural-covered columns
(painted by such artists as Brancusi and Chagall), dark wood panelling and soft lighting
have hardly changed an iota since the days of Sartre, Soutine, Man Ray, the dancer
Josephine Baker and other regulars.

Chef Karil Lopez' modern bistro has a distinct kitchen feel with its small brightly lit white
walls and white-painted beams. The only decorative feature is a candle-lit crystal of rose-
tinted salt on each table - signalling that food (free-range chicken stuffed with dried fruit,
beef cooked in duck fat, langoustine ravioli…) is the Salt Crystal's raison d'être.

Service can be hit-and-miss but the blackboard-chalked menu - crab and avocado mille-
feuille, tartare, cod with tapenade - is more hit than miss and the sundrenched terrace
