In-Depth Information
The first large-scale cast of Rodin's famous sculpture The Thinker (Le Penseur), made in
1902, resides in the garden - the perfect place to contemplate this heroic naked figure con-
ceived by Rodin to represent intellect and poetry (it was originally titled The Poet ).
The Gates of Hell (La Porte de l'Enfer) was commissioned in 1880 as the entrance for a
never-built museum, and Rodin worked on his sculptural masterwork up until his death in
1917. Standing 6m high by 4m wide, its 180 figures comprise an intricate scene from
Dante's Inferno .
Marble monument to love The Kiss (Le Baiser) was originally part of The Gates of
Hell . The sculpture's entwined lovers caused controversy on its completion due to Rodin's
then-radical approach of depicting women as equal partners in ardour.
