Local Life
A Stroll Along Rue Mouffetard
Originally a Roman road, the sloping, cobbled rue Mouffetard acquired its
name in the 18th century, when the now underground River Bièvre be-
came the communal waste disposal for local tanners and wood pulpers.
The odours gave rise to the name Mouffette ('skunk'), which evolved into
Mouffetard. The street is now filled with market stalls, cheap eateries and
lively bars.
