In-Depth Information
A constant queue marks the entrance to the Tours de Notre Dame , the cathedral's bell
towers. Climb the 400-odd spiralling steps to the top of the western facade of the North
Tower, where you'll find yourself on the rooftop Galerie des Chimères (Gargoyles
Gallery), face-to-face with frightening and fantastic gargoyles, and a spectacular view of
Paris. In the South Tower, under renovation at the time of writing, hangs Emmanuel , the
cathedral's original 13-tonne bell. In 2013, to celebrate Notre Dame's 850th anniversary, the
cathedral was kitted out with nine new bells - each named, of course - to complement Em-
manuel . At the same time, the four less-tuneful bells added in 1856 were taken down and
displayed for posterity in square Jean XXIII , the grassy park behind the cathedral.
