FRENCH
CHEZ RAMULAUD
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 01 43 72 23 29; 269 rue du Faubourg St-Antoine, 11e; menus lunch €12-15,
dinner €29; noon-2.30pm & 7.30-10.30pm Mon-Fri, 7.30-10.30pm Sat; Faidherbe-Chaligny)
With its peaceful, retro atmosphere, this old-school brasserie is reminiscent of an established
provincial restaurant. The blackboard offerings are both comforting and substantial: daily
soups, terrines, coddled eggs with seasonal mushrooms and other French classics.
ITALIAN
SWANN ET VINCENT
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 01 43 43 49 40; www.swann-vincent.fr ; 7 rue St-Nicolas, 12e; mains €13-19,
lunch menu €17.50; noon-2.30pm & 7.45-11.30pm; Ledru-Rollin)
Paris meets Italy in this elegant, old-fashioned restaurant. Unpretentious staff will help you
select from the huge blackboard, whose offerings include temptations such as saffron risotto
with speck and veal cutlets drizzled with lemon. Go easy on the olive-and-herb bread - you
need to leave room for the tiramisu.
NORTH AFRICAN
LE SOUK
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 01 49 29 05 08; www.le-souk-paris.com ; 1 rue Keller, 11e; menus
€18.50-24.50; noon-2.30pm & 7pm-midnight Tue-Sun; ; Ledru-Rollin)
You'll enjoy this place almost as much for the decor as the food - from the clay pots over-
flowing with spices on the outside to the exuberant Moroccan interior. The food is just as
authentic, notably the duck tajine, the pigeon pastilla (pie) and the vegetarian couscous.
MODERN FRENCH
SEPTIME
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 01 43 67 38 29; 80 rue de Charonne, 11e; menus lunch €28-55, dinner €58;
7-10pm Mon, 12.15-2pm & 7-10pm Tue-Fri; Charonne)
Reading the menu at newly Michelin-starred Septime won't get you far, as it looks mostly
like an obscure shopping list (hanger steak/chicory/roots, chicken's egg/foie gras/ lardo ).
And that's if you even get a menu - if you order the excellent five-course meal (available for
both lunch and dinner), you won't even know what's being served until it arrives. Reserve in
advance.
The alchemists in Bertrand Grébaut's kitchen are capable of producing some truly beauti-
ful creations, and the blue-smocked waitstaff go out of their way to ensure that the culinary
surprises are all pleasant ones.
For a pre- or post-meal drink, drop by its wine bar Septime La Cave . And for stunning
seafood tapas, try its sister restaurant Clamato .
