FRENCH
MON ONCLE LE VIGNERON
( GOOGLE MAP ;
01 42 00 43 30; 71 rue de Rébeval, 19e; dinner with wine €30-40;
8.30-11.30pm
Mon-Sat; Belleville)
The name alone enchants. My Uncle the Winemaker is a small, vintage-styled wine cellar
and épicierie fine (upmarket grocer's) arranged like an old-fashioned kitchen - for good
reason. Each evening this Pandora's box of gastronomic goodies in Belleville dons its table
d'hôte apron. Dinner is around a shared table and advance reservations are essential.
BISTRO
LE DAUPHIN
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 01 55 28 78 88; 131 av Parmentier, 11e; 2-/3-course lunch menus €23/27,
mains €15-20; 12.30-2.30pm Tue-Fri, 7.30-11.30pm Tue-Sat; Goncourt)
Advance reservations are essential at this buzzing bistro. Run by the same team as nearby
Le Chateaubriand, the stark white space with marble floor, bar, ceiling and walls (and the
odd mirror) is a temple to taste. Lunch is a choice of two starters and two mains (one fish,
one meat), presented like a work of art on white china. Dinner is strictly à la carte.
MODERN FRENCH
CHATOMAT
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
01 47 97 25 77; 6 rue Victor Letalle, 20e; mains €15-20;
7.30-10.30pm
Tue-Sat & 1st Sun of month; Ménilmontant, Couronnes or Père Lachaise)
No dinner address is worth the trek to Belleville more than this contemporary bistro with
plain white walls, post-industrial flavour and bags of foodie buzz. In the kitchen of the old
shop-turned-restaurant, Alice and Victor cook up just three starters, three mains and three
desserts each night - and none disappoint. Book in advance.
VEGETARIAN
SOYA
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
01 48 06 33 02; 20 rue de la Pierre Levée, 11e; lunch menus €16-20, brunch
€25;
noon-3.30pm & 7-11pm Mon-Fri, 11.30am-11pm Sat, 11.30am-4pm Sun;
;
Goncourt or
République)
A favourite for its ubercool location in an industrial atelier (with bare cement, metal
columns and big windows), Soya is a full-on cantine bio (organic eatery) in what was once a
staunchly working-class district. Dishes, many tofu-based, are vegetarian and the weekend
brunch buffet is deliciously lazy and languid. A glass floor floods the basement area with
light.
