MÉMORIAL DE LA SHOAH
No single sight in Paris is as exhaustive or emotionally exhausting as this. Secreted in
what began in 1956 as a memorial to the unknown Jewish martyr, the Mémorial de la
Shoah is now one of Europe's most important Holocaust museums and documenta-
tion centres. A vast permanent collection and well-thought-out temporary exhibits all
pertain to the Holocaust and the German occupation of parts of France and Paris dur-
ing WWII.
The entrance to the Mémorial de la Shoah remembers the victims of the Shoah - a
Hebrew word meaning 'catastrophe' and synonymous in France with the Holocaust -
with the Mur des Noms (Wall of Names; 2006), a wall inscribed with the names of
76,000 Jews, including 11,000 children, deported from France to Nazi extermination
camps during WWII. Deep in the appropriately sombre, bunker-like building lies the
crypt and tomb to the unknown Jewish martyr - all six million Jews with no grave of
their own.
