MUSÉE CARNAVALET
A poetic ode to Parisian histoire, this unusual history museum secreted in a
pair of remarkable hôtels particuliers is one of the city's quietly wonderful
surprises. Its maze of period rooms - more than 100 in all - chart the city's
history from prehistory to modern times through a 600,000-piece fest of art,
artefacts and historic objects. A visit here is as much about the history of in-
terior design as city history, and a half day can easily be spent savouring the
permanent collection (free) and occasional temporary exhibitions (admission
fee).
