Although there are cheese shops throughout the city, this one is actually worth a trip across
town. Cheeses are sold as they should be, grouped into five main categories: fromage de
chèvre (goat's-milk cheese), fromage à pâte persillée (veined or blue cheese), fromage à
pâte molle (soft cheese), fromage à pâte demi-dure (semihard cheese) and fromage à pâte
dure (hard cheese).
WORTH A DETOUR
MARCHÉ AUX PUCES DE ST-OUEN
A vast flea market, the Marché aux Puces de St-Ouen was founded in the late 19th
century. It's said to be Europe's largest market, and has more than 2500 stalls
grouped into a dozen marchés(market areas), each with its own speciality (eg Paul
Bert for 17th-century furniture, Malik for clothing, Biron for Asian art). There are miles
upon miles of 'freelance' stalls; come prepared to spend some time.
