CLUB
LE CARMEN
midnight-6pm daily;
Pigalle or
Blanche)
So named because this is where Bizet wrote the opera, the decor here is over-the-top opu-
lent, with extravagant period details still intact and antique furnishings to boot. There's a bar
on the ground floor (cocktails are just so-so) and a dance club in the basement.
CLUB
LA MACHINE DU MOULIN ROUGE
Part of the original Moulin Rouge (well, the boiler room, anyway), this club packs 'em in on
weekends with a dance floor, concert hall, Champagne bar and outdoor terrace.
Gare du Nord & Canal St-Martin
CAFE
HOLYBELLY
9am-6pm Thu-Mon, from
10am Sat & Sun; Jacques Bonsergent)
The largest and liveliest of Paris' new wave of barista-run coffee shops, this soulful hang-out
features distressed decor and a serious kitchen serving up breakfast and lunch, with a list of
seasonal fruits and veggies scrawled on the blackboard in the brick-walled back room. Bo-
nus: pinball machine.
CAFE
TUCK SHOP
10am-5pm Tue-Fri, 11am-6pm Sat & Sun;
Jacques Bonsergent)
Superb coffee at this Aussie-run vegetarian hang-out. Food is as affordable as it gets in Paris
(€10 or under for a meal), though the space is small - getting a seat may require patience.
BAR
CHEZ PRUNE
This Soho-boho cafe put Canal St-Martin on the map a decade ago and its good vibes and
rough-around-the-edges look show no sign of fading in the near future.
