The 'Singer' (named after the 19th-century Lyonnais socialist singer-songwriter Pierre
Dupont) could be a film set, with its curved zinc bar and art-nouveau mouldings. Refresh-
ingly unhip, the food is old-school French and very substantial with mains that range from
noix St-Jacques provençal
(scallops in herbed tomato sauce) and bouillabaisse to
daube de
sanglier
(boar stew).
AFRICAN
JAMBO
7.30-10.30pm daily; Belleville)
This charming restaurant, decorated with shields and masks from different parts of Africa,
was opened by a former aid worker and his Rwandan wife. The menu is inspired by central
African cuisine; many of the ingredients are imported direct from Kigali, the Rwandan cap-
ital.
BRASSERIE, BAR
LA ROTONDE
19e; mains €14-22, bar food from €3.50; 10am-2am Mon-Sat, 11am-8pm Sun; ; Stalingrad)
Overlooking the Bassin de la Villette, this striking 18th-century edifice went from customs
station to police barracks to salt warehouse before its most recent conversion in late 2011 to
hip new brasserie. The light-filled circular atrium is the show stealer, but the casual bar-cafe
(opens 6pm) with inexpensive meals is what draws in the crowds.
