PARC DE LA VILLETTE
The largest park in Paris, the Parc de la Villette is a cultural centre, kids' play-
ground and landscaped urban space all rolled into one. The French love of
geometric forms defines the layout - the colossal mirror-like sphere of the
Géode cinema, an undulating strip of corrugated steel stretching for hun-
dreds of metres, the bright-red cubical pavilions known as folies - but the in-
tersection of two canals, the Ourcq and the St-Denis, brings the most natural
and popular element: water. Although it's a fair hike from central Paris, con-
sider the trip here for one of the many events (world, rock and classical music
concerts; art exhibits; outdoor cinema; circuses; modern dance) or if you
have children.
Events throughout the year are staged in the wonderful old Grande Halle, Le Zénith, the
Cabaret Sauvage and the Cité de la Musique . Additionally, the new Paris Philharmonic Hall
is due to be completed here in 2015.
There's an information centre with maps at the park's southern edge.
