In-Depth Information
Built between 1532 and 1637, the church is primarily Gothic, although a neoclassical facade
was added on the western side in the mid-18th century. Inside, contemplate the stained glass
and paintings, many given by guilds and merchants from the nearby Les Halles. Highlights
include a work by Rubens and the colourful bas-relief of Parisian market porters (1969) by
British sculptor Raymond Mason in the side chapels. Outside the church is a gigantic sculp-
ture of a head and hand entitled L'Écoute (Listen; 1986) by Henri de Miller.
The Organ
France's largest organ, above the church's western entrance, has 101 stops and 8000 pipes
dating from 1854. Organ recitals at 5.30pm on Sunday are a must for music lovers, as is
June's Festival des 36 Heures de St-Eustache - 36 hours of nonstop music embracing a sym-
phony of genres, world music, choral and jazz included.
