ÉGLISE ST-EUSTACHE
Just north of the gardens, snuggling up to the city's old marketplace, now the
soulless Forum des Halles, is one of the most beautiful churches in Paris.
Majestic, architecturally magnificent and musically outstanding, St-Eustache
has made spirits soar for centuries.
Tales of spiritual pomp and circumstance are plentiful. Richelieu and Molière were bap-
tised here (Molière also got married here), Louis XIV celebrated his first Holy Communion
here and Colbert was buried here. Mozart chose St-Eustache for the funeral mass of his
mother and in 1855 Berlioz' Te Deum premiered here - the church's acoustics are ex-
traordinary.
