This large (and expensive) waxworks inside the passage Jouffroy has some 300 wax figures.
They largely look more like caricatures than characters but, still, where else do you get to
see Marilyn Monroe, Charles de Gaulle and Spiderman face to face, or the original death
masks of some of the French Revolution leaders?
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
THE UNSUNG MUSEUMS OF PARIS
Marc Restellini, director of the excellent La Pinacothèque , filled us in on his favourite
art museums in Paris.
Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris An intelligent museum with high-quality,
original exhibits, it carries out its mission as a modern-art museum with courage.
Musée Dapper The greatest collection of African art in the world, imbued with a ma-
gical setting. It's a small museum, but when you leave it's as if you're returning from
an incredible journey.
Musée Jacquemart-André The second major private museum in Paris along with La
Pinacothèque, it stages real art-history exhibits that are both original and daring.
EATING
The Champs-Élysées area is known for its big-name chefs (Alain Ducasse, Pi-
erre Gagnaire) and culinary icons (Taillevent), but there are a few under-the-
radar restaurants too, where Parisians who live and work in the area dine on a
regular basis. You'll also find good restaurants inside Publicis Drugstore .
Healthy budget options include branches of the Parisian sandwich-shop
chain Cojean.
Head to the Grands Boulevards for a more diverse selection - everything
from hole-in-the-wall wine bars to organic cafes.
