LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
THE ART OF LA DÉFENSE
More than just office space, La Défense is an engaging, open-air art gallery. Calder,
Miró, Agam, César and Torricini are among the international artists behind the colour-
ful and often surprising sculptures and murals that pepper the central 1km-long
promenade. Pick up a map and excellent booklets in English outlining walks to discov-
er its art and surprising green spaces at the Info Défense ( GOOGLE MAP ; 01 47 74 84

kiosque, to the side of the moon-shaped CNIT building on the main drag.
EATING
In addition to the pickings of the 16e arrondissement, the many restaurants of
Les Invalides and buzzing market street of rue Cler, 7e, are a short walk from
the Eiffel Tower - or, to shop for the perfect picnic, follow the local office
crowd to rue de Chaillot. For a truly memorable experience, dine in the icon it-
self.

There is no lovelier sanctuary from the Eiffel Tower crowds than this old-fashioned tea
room, the elegant love child of a mother-and-daughter team who greet regulars with a bisou
(kiss). Delicious homemade cakes and citronnade (ginger lemonade) aside, the Two Bees
cooks up quiches, tarts and salads ensuring every table is full by 1pm. Breakfast and brunch
available too.
