An excellent ethnographic
museum, the Museu do Índio
was established by Salesian
nuns and is based on their
work as missionaries in the
Rio Negro area. There are
many feather work exhibits
and some weapons and tools,

One of the few places around
Manaus where you might see
a jaguar at close quarters, the
Zoológico do CIGS is a great
place to take children. Located
8 miles (13 km) from Manaus
toward Ponta Negra in the
army jungle training center,
this small zoo is home to over
300 animals including many
caimans, monkeys, exotic
birds, and an unforgettable
large pit full of anacondas.
