GETTING AROUND
The São Luís airport in Maranhão has
international flights, and Piauí's capital city
Teresina can be reached by flights en route to
São Luís. There are buses linking almost every
town in this region, but roads are in very poor
condition. It is also possible to rent a car. The
inland attractions of Piauí are far from Teresina,
and from each other, so travel well equipped
with plenty of gas, water, and supplies.
Most of Maranhão's highlights are on the
coast. The Lençóis Maranhenses are best
accessed from Barreirinhas, located just on the
edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.
From São Luís, it is a 45-minute flight in a
single-engine plane, or a four-hour drive. Once
there, most excursions are by boat or in a 4WD,
as there are no paved roads in the region.
