Although Brazilian author
Jorge Amado (1912-2001)
never lived in Pelourinho,
many of his beloved novels
were set in this neighborhood
(see p200) . Opened in 1987,
the Casa de Jorge Amado is
a small museum housed in a
pretty blue colonial building
located at the top end of
Largo do Pelourinho. It is
one of the main monuments
dedicated to Bahia's most
famous author. Its four floors
comprise the entire archive
of his work and include a
research center.
The collection on display
consists mostly of covers of
his topics and personal
belongings that tell the story
of his life. A mural on the
ground floor shows the
languages into which his
works have been translated;
over 60 in total.

Salvador's main cathedral,
built between 1657 and 1672,
is considered to be one of the
richest examples of Portuguese
Baroque architecture. The
cathedral's façade is made of
Portuguese lioz, a type of
limestone. The interior walls
and tall pillars are also
covered with the pale-colored
stone, giving the church a
bright and spacious feel.
The vaulted ceiling of the
main nave is made from
wood. The decorations are
carved in relief and stand out
from the ceiling with an
almost three-dimensional
effect. The main altar and two
smaller side altars are also
carved out of wood and
covered in gold leaf.
Dedicated to St. Francis, the
altar contains a silver-plated
statue of Nossa Senhora das
Maravilhas (Our Lady
of Miracles), which is
said to have inspired
Father Antônio Vieira,
a 17th-century Jesuit
priest who fought
against the enslavement
of indigenous people.
His fiery, anti-slavery
sermons did not sit
well with the
Inquisition, who
subsequently ordered
his arrest. The former
Jesuit library now

This small museum in the
former Faculty of Medicine
building houses a collection
of photographs, artwork and
artifacts all related to the
African diaspora in Brazil. The
main exhibit displays objects
and crafts from the original
African cultures of regions
such as Angola and Nigeria
where Brazil-bound slaves
were captured. The highlight
of the collection is the 27 life-
sized wood carvings of the
orixás (see p177) by
Bahian artist Carybé
(1911-97), depicting
their weapons and
regalia, together with the
animals or domain over
which they are thought
to rule. Yemanjá,
Goddess of the Sea, is
shown with a fish and
seashells and the
mirrors and trinkets
offered to her by
supplicants; the warrior
Ogun is shown
with his sword
and armor.
