In-Depth Information
Pinacoteca do Estado 0
The Pinacoteca is a significant repository of Brazilian
art, with an archive of over 5,000 paintings and
sculptures representing all major Brazilinan artists
and artistic movements. The galleries trace the
evolution of Brazilian styles, which began as mock-
European naturalism and gradually diversified into
social realist, naive, and abstract forms. In the mid-
1990s, the Pinacoteca was magnificently renovated by
the noted architect Paulo Mendes de Rocha, who filled
the original Neo-Classical building with carefully
positioned partitions and capped it with a translucent
roof. The magical sense of space and light perfectly
complements the intensity of color and tone which
characterizes Brazilian art.

GALLERY GUIDE
The Pinacoteca's permanent collection is on the first floor,
with galleries housing the Modernist collection, just above
the main entrance. Brazilian 19th-century paintings and
the more recent works flank this gallery, while sculptures by
French artists, such as Aristide Maillol, occupy a prominent
display. The ground floor is devoted to temporary exhibitions
