Putting Brazil on the Map
The largest country in South America, Brazil borders
most other South American countries and covers over
3.3 million sq miles (8.5 million sq km), from the vast
tropical Amazon region in the north to the cooler,
more European-style South. It is divided into 26 states
and one federal district - its political and
administrative capital, Brasília. Brazil's
population, now reaching over 185
million, is mostly concentrated in the
Southeast (see pp14-15) .
