Figure 3.2 Comparison of transmission coe cients for linearly polarized
excitation calculated using (3.39) (dotted lines) and with full-wave
numerical simulations (solid) for a pair of metasurfaces composed of PEC
nanorod inclusions with dimensions 200 nm
50 nm embedded in a
periodic square lattice with period 300 nm. The metasurface thickness is
10 nm, and we consider a rotation angle of (a,b) 45 and (c,d) 90 for the
second metasurface.

inclusions. This discrepancy is expected to be further minimized
with denser andsmaller inclusions.
When two metasurfaces are cascaded, this analytical approach
allows us to easily tune and optimize the distance between
neighboring metasurfaces and the in-plane rotation angle between
consecutive layers for the specific application of interest. The
spacing between layers can be readily included in the model by
considering a segment of transmission line, under the assumption
that the coupling is dominated by the zero -th order diffraction
