So, again, the key here is not the tool suite, but understanding the busi-
ness context of those BI tools. Thus, the remaining sections of this chapter
will focus on the discipline of BI.
BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE
Business intelligence (BI) is a set of methodologies and technologies for
gathering, storing, analyzing, and providing access to data to help users
make better business decisions. The goal of business intelligence is to trans-
form data into information and, ultimately, into knowledge and wisdom.
Business intelligence is usually implemented to gain sustainable competi-
tive advantages, and it is a valuable core competence in some instances.
Brunson (2005) lists 10 trends in business intelligence:
1. Taking data quality very seriously : Data quality is more than just
entering the data correctly. Management now realizes that data qual-
ity must be baked into the processes that stage data for analysis.
