• Oracle Essbase continues the Hyperion Essbase tradition of multidi-
mensional database management.
• Berkeley DB offers embedded database processing.
• MySQL, a relational database management system licensed under
the GNU Affero General Public License (GNU AGPL), was initially
developed by MySQL AB.
• Oracle NoSQL Database is a scalable, distributed key-value
NoSQL database.
• Oracle Rdb, a relational database system, runs on OpenVMS plat-
forms. Oracle acquired Rdb in 1994 from Digital Equipment
Corporation. Oracle has since made many enhancements to this
product, and development continues today.
We talked about Essbase in Chapter 2, on analytics, so we won't delve
into it here. Berkeley DB is written in C with API (application program-
ming interface) bindings for C++, C#, PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl,
Smalltalk, and many other programming languages. Berkeley DB is not a
relational database.
Berkeley DB can support thousands of simultaneous threads of con-
trol or concurrent processes, manipulating databases as large as 256
