. There is then little accumulation of iron in the oxidation zone because the O

diffuses so much faster than the Fe

that almost no Fe

can move towards the
oxidation front before it is oxidized. The generation of acidity is correspondingly
dispersed through the soil. These conclusions are discussed further in Chapter 6
in relation to the rhizospheres of wetland plants.
