porosity, Kirk et al . (1990b) calculated a four-fold increase in the penetration of
O 2 . There is then little accumulation of iron in the oxidation zone because the O 2
diffuses so much faster than the Fe 2 + that almost no Fe 2 + can move towards the
oxidation front before it is oxidized. The generation of acidity is correspondingly
dispersed through the soil. These conclusions are discussed further in Chapter 6
in relation to the rhizospheres of wetland plants.
