8.3 Helicates and Peptide-Helicates
In this section, helicates will be briefly introduced and peptide-helicates incorporating
amino acids or short peptides as spacers will be described in detail.
8.3.1 Helicates
In 1987, the term “helicate” was introduced by Lehn for oligonuclear coordination com-
pounds in which two or more linear ligand strands wrap around two or more metal centers
(Figure 8.5) [20]. The complexes are formed in a “spontaneous” self-assembly process by
a simple mixing of ligands and metal ions [21,22].
