Street-by-Street: Siena 4
The principal sights of Siena are found in
the network of narrow streets and alleys
around the fan-shaped Piazza del
Campo. Scarcely any street is level, as
Siena, like Rome, is built on seven hills.
This adds to the pleasure of exploring:
one minute the city is laid out to view
before you and the next you are in a
warren of medieval houses. Packed into Siena are
the 17 contrade (parishes) whose animal symbols are
everywhere on carvings, plaques and car stickers.
Aerial bridges and
corridors linking buildings on
opposite sides of the street
are characteristic of Siena.
