1990
'The Wall - Live in Berlin', starring Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, celebrates the Wall's de-
mise on the former Potsdamer Platz death strip.
1990
The official reunification of the two Germanys goes into effect on 3 October. The date
becomes a national holiday.
1991
Members of the Bundestag (German parliament) vote to reinstate Berlin as Ger-
many's capital and to move the federal government here. Berliners elect the first joint
city government.
1994
The last British, French, Russian and American troops withdraw from Berlin, ending
nearly half a century of occupation and protection.
1999
On 19 April the German parliament holds its first session in the historic Reichstag
building, after complete restoration by Lord Norman Foster.
2001
Openly gay politician Klaus Wowereit is elected governing mayor of Berlin.
2006
Berlin's first central train station, the Hauptbahnhof, opens on 26 May. Two weeks
later Germany kicks off the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
2008
The last flight takes off from Berlin-Tempelhof airport, which becomes an event space
and public park.
2009
Techno club Berghain is ranked number one on the Top 100 Clubs list by UK magazine
DJ Mag.
