Historic Mitte
APARTMENT
ADINA APARTMENT HOTEL BERLIN CHECKPOINT CHARLIE
1-bedroom apt from €150; ; Stadtmitte, Spittelmarkt)
Adina's contemporary one- and two-bedroom apartments with full kitchens are tailor-made
for cost-conscious families, anyone in need of elbow room, and self-caterers (a supermarket
is a minute away). Regular hotel rooms without kitchens are also available. Staff are accom-
modating and the pool and sauna are great for combating postflight fatigue. See the website
for other Adina properties in town. Optional breakfast is €19.
BOUTIQUE HOTEL
ARTE LUISE KUNSTHOTEL
shared bathroom €59-84; ; Friedrichstrasse, Friedrichstrasse)
At this 'gallery with rooms', each unit is designed by different artists who receive royalties
whenever it's rented. They're all wonderfully imaginative, but we're especially fond of No
107 with its giant bed, and the boudoir-red 'Cabaret' (No 206). Cash-strapped art fans
should enquire about the smaller, bathless rooms. Avoid those facing the train tracks. Op-
tional breakfast is €11.
HOTEL
ARCOTEL JOHN F
€124; ; Hausvogteiplatz)
This lifestyle hotel pays homage to President John F Kennedy with plenty of whimsical de-
tail, including hand-carved rocking chairs (an allusion to the president's back problem) and
curvaceous lamps inspired by Jackie's ball gowns. Rooms are quiet and smartly outfitted
with dark wooden furniture and beds backed by oversized tufted headboards. Optional
breakfast is €22.

Despite its ho-hum location on a busy street, this hotel scores high for comfort, design and a
'with-it' vibe. The lobby, with its extravagant lamps and armchairs, sets the tone for spacious
