BRIDGE OF SPIES
There's been a bridge linking Berlin with Potsdam across the Havel for over 350 years,
but the 125m-long Glie
ücke only gained fame during the Cold War when the
first spy exchange between the Soviets and the US took place in 1962. At 8.52am,
Gary Powers, the U2 pilot who'd been shot down over Russia, and exposed KGB intelli-
gence officer Rudolf Abel, crossed the white line that had been painted in the middle
of the bridge to mark the border of the Iron Curtain. Although only two more ex-
changes took place on Glienicker Brücke (in 1975 and 1986), it was elevated to near
mythical status in print and on celluloid. An exhibit with historical detail is in the
works.
