MILITARY AVIATION HISTORY ON THE RUNWAY
MUSEUM
MILITÄRHISTORISCHES MUSEUM - FLUGPLATZ BERLIN-GATOW
(Museum of Military History - Airfield Berlin-Gatow;
030-3687 2601; www.mhm-gatow.de ; Am Flugplatz
Gatow 33; 10am-6pm Tue-Sun ; 135)
Operated by the Bundeswehr, the Militärhistorisches Museum - Flugplatz Berlin-
Gatow is a fascinating destination for fans of aviation, technology, history and the mil-
itary. It spreads its wings over a military airfield used both by the Nazis and the Royal
Air Force. Exhibits in the control tower and two hangars focus on various aspects of
aerial warfare, with plenty of old planes, air defense guns and engines on display. Over
100 fighter jets, bombers, helicopters and weapons systems litter the runway, includ-
ing such gems as WWI biplanes, a Russian MiG-21, a Messerschmidt ME-163 Komet
and a GDR-era Antonov An-14. The museum is about 9km south of central Spandau.
Take bus 135 from S-/U-Bahn Rathaus Spandau to 'Kurpromenade', then walk for
1km.
EATING & DRINKING
GERMAN
RESTAURANT KOLK
(

11am-11pm;
Altstadt
Spandau)
Even after a quarter century, Kolk hasn't lost its grip on the crowd. The rustic ambience of a
converted 19th-century firehouse matches a menu headlined by such regional dishes as
hearty goulash, meatballs in caper sauce and boiled eel in dill sauce. Snag a garden table in
fine weather.
INTERNATIONAL
SATT UND SELIG
(
030-3675 3877; www.sattundselig.de ; Carl-Schurz-Strasse 47; mains €8-18;
9am-11pm;
Alt-
stadt Spandau)
In a baroque half-timbered house in the pedestrian zone (with outdoor tables in summer),
this casual eatery is a good pit stop from morning to night. There's a great breakfast selec-
tion, homemade cakes and a menu of bistro classics (schnitzel, burgers, salads, pasta) as
long as a Tolstoy novel.
