In-Depth Information
This red-brick Gothic pile is famous for hosting Brandenburg's first public Lutheran-style
worship service in 1539 under Elector Joachim II, thereby bringing the Reformation to the
region. That's him in bronze outside the church. Inside, important treasures include a 14th-
century baptismal font, a baroque pulpit and a late-Renaissance altar. Tours up the 77m-high
tower are available weekends only.

HISTORIC BUILDING
GOTISCHES HAUS
( 030-333 9388; Breite Strasse 32; 10am-6pm Mon-Sat; Altstadt Spandau)
This well-preserved late-Gothic gem sports ornate net-ribbed vaulting on the ground floor,
which houses the local tourist office.
NEIGHBOURHOOD
KOLK
( Altstadt Spandau)
Separated from the Altstadt by the busy Strasse am Juliusturm, the Kolk quarter exudes me-
dieval village flair with its romantic narrow lanes, crooked, half-timbered houses and 78m-
long section of town wall. Its key sight is the church of St Marien am Behnitz ( 030-353
9630; www.behnitz.de ; Behnitz 9; 2-5pm) . A top-to-bottom makeover of the 1848 brick pile
saw the return of the hand-painted murals, decorative stucco and stained-glass windows that
had been destroyed during a botched 1960s restoration job.
Try catching a concert here - the acoustics are tremendous.
