bench'), the original gallows that stood in the roll-call area and, in the cellar, heart-wrench-
ing artwork scratched into the wall by prisoners.
The most sickening displays, though, are about the extermination area called Station Z ,
which was separated by a wall from the rest of the grounds and consisted of an execution
trench, a crematorium and a gas chamber. The most notorious mass execution took place in
autumn 1941 when over 10,000 Soviet POWs were executed here in the course of four
weeks.
In the far right corner, a new building and two original barracks house the Soviet Special
Camp exhibit, which documents how Sachsenhausen was used by the Soviets between 1945
and 1950.
EATING & DRINKING
No food is available at the memorial site, although a vending machine in the Neues Museum
dispenses hot drinks. There are cafes, bakeries and small markets outside Oranienburg train
station.
Spandau
Explore
Spandau is a congenial mix of green expanses, rivers, industry and almost rural residential
areas wrapped around a medieval core famous for its 16th-century bastion, the Zitadelle
Spandau (Spandau Citadel). Older than Berlin by a few years, it sits at the confluence of
Havel and Spree and thrived as an independent city for nearly eight centuries and only be-
came part of Berlin in 1920. To this day, its people still talk about 'going to Berlin' when
heading to any other city district. Nearly all sights handily cluster in and around the Altstadt.
