In-Depth Information
This new bauble in Berlin's necklace of party spots has injected some sass into the once
fairly sleepy western city centre. Office jockeys invade on Thursdays for the after-work
party, Fridays are big with wrinkle-free hip-hop hipsters while dolled-up weekend warriors
bust a move beneath the feathery LED light installation on Saturdays.
PUB
DIENER
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;

6pm-2am;
Savignyplatz)
In business for over a century, this Old Berlin haunt was taken over by German heavyweight
champion Franz Diener in the 1950s and has since been one of West Berlin's preeminent
artist pubs. From Billy Wilder to Harry Belafonte, they all came for beer and Bulette (meat
patty) and left behind signed black-and-white photographs that grace Diener's walls to this
day.

UNIVERSUM LOUNGE

6pm-3am; Adenauerplatz)
This retro-glam libation station has daily happy-hour specials until 9pm, including an Aper-
itivo Italiano with free finger food on Wednesdays. After the final curtain at the theatre in
the same building (a 1920s gem by the esteemed Erich Mendelsohn) you sometimes have to
shoehorn your way inside. The bar is about 300m west of U-Bahn station Adenauerplatz.
BAR
BAR AM STEINPLATZ
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 030-554 4440; Steinplatz 4; Ernst-Reuter-Platz)
The latest liquid playground of cocktail whisperer Christian Gentemann is at the art-deco
jewel Hotel am Steinplatz. The classic and creative drinks (how about a porcini-infused
martini?) often showcase regionally produced spirits, and even the draught beer is crafted by
the Berlin-based Rollberg brewery. Bar bites complement the drinks,
PUB
ZWIEBELFISCH
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
030-312 7363; www.zwiebelfisch-berlin.de ; Savignyplatz 7;
noon-6am;
Savignyplatz)
With its clientele of grizzled and aspiring artists, actors and writers, this cosy pub has been
Charlottenburg at its boho best since the patchouli-perfumed 1960s. Arrested in time, it's a
fabulous sliver of pre-reunification West Berlin and ideal for guzzling that final drink while
the suits are gearing up for the office grind.
