In-Depth Information
ture bears an uncanny resemblance to Paris' Eiffel Tower and looks especially attract-
ive when lit up at night. It started transmitting signals in 1926; nine years later the
world's first regular TV program was broadcast from here. From the viewing platform
at 126m or the restaurant at 55m you can enjoy sweeping views of the Grunewald
forest and the western city, as well as the AVUS, Germany's first car-racing track,
which opened in 1921; AVUS stands for Automobil-, Verkehrs- und Übungsstrasse
(auto, traffic and practice track). The Nazis made it part of the autobahn system,
which it still is today.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
BERLIN'S LITTLE ASIA
It's not quite Chinatown, but if you're in the mood for Asian food, simply head to Kant-
strasse between Savignyplatz and Wilmersdorfer Strasse to find the city's densest
concentration of authentic Chinese restaurants, including the perennially popular
Good Friends . At lunchtime, most offer value-priced specials perfect for filling up on
the cheap. In between are Chinese furniture stores, massage parlours and Asian su-
permarkets as well as various Vietnamese and Thai eateries.

fabulous views of the city and the Berlin Zoo - in summer from a sweeping terrace. Drinks-
