FRANKE BRASSERIE - ORGANIC EATERY
bergstrasse 14; 2-course weekday lunch €12, dinner mains €13-27;
5.30-11pm Mon-Sat;
Zoologis-
cher Garten, Zoologischer Garten)
This is one stylish and sexy hotel restaurant, which has put its eggs into the organic basket
right down to the beer and wine. Sit close to the open kitchen to watch the cooks do their
magic in creating such palate teasers as the baby burger trio, tiger shrimp with mint and
black pasta or the slow-cooked ribs teamed with pumpkin, spinach and pine nuts.
FRENCH, BELGIAN
BREL
mains €10-23; 9am-1am; Savignyplatz)
Belgian cult crooner Jacques Brel is the namesake of this corner bistro in a former bordello
that now draws bleary-eyed bohos for coffee and croissants, suits and tourists for lunch spe-
cials, and artsy types and stylish couples for oysters, rump steaks and crème brûlée at din-
nertime. Also tops for
moules frites
during mussel season (September to February).
JAPANESE
MR HAI KABUKI
noon-midnight; M19, 109, Adenauerplatz, Uhlandstrasse)
The menu features classic
nigiri
and maki but most regulars flock to Mr Hai for more un-
conventional sushi morsels, composed like little works of art. Some creations feature kim-
chi, pumpkin and cream cheese or are flambéed and deep-fried. Sounds bizarre but it works.
From U-Bahn station Uhlandstrasse, take bus 109 or M19 two stops to Olivaer Platz.
