Explore: City West & Charlottenburg
The glittering heart of West Berlin during the Cold War, Charlottenburg is nirvana for sho-
paholics, royal groupies and culture lovers. On its main artery - Kurfürstendamm - fashion-
able boutiques mix it up with high-street chains and department stores. The holy grail
among the latter is the KaDeWe on nearby Tauentzienstrasse. There's more shopping in the
leafy side streets, also home to relaxed cafes, neighbourhood-adored restaurants and both
snazzy bars and Old Berlin-style pubs.
Eclipsed by historic Mitte and other eastern districts after reunification, Charlottenburg is
finally reclaiming some of the limelight, especially in the city's west around Zoo Station.
Recent developments include the 32-storey Zoo Fenster tower, with the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel, which dramatically changed the western city skyline; the Bikini Berlin concept mall
next door, delivering a dose of hipster cred; and the rejuvenated Zoopalast cinema, bringing
a dose of retro glam. The prestigious C/O gallery space has also joined the westward migra-
tion.
About 3.5km northwest of here, Schloss Charlottenburg is not only the best-preserved
royal palace in Berlin but is also surrounded by a lovely park and a trio of top museums.
