Berlin's oldest public park has provided relief from urbanity since 1840, but has been
hilly only since the late 1940s when wartime debris was piled here to create two

Or visit communist-era memorials: along Friedenstrasse, the Denkmal der Spani-
enkämpfer ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) pays respect to the German members of the Interna-
tional Brigades who died in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). The Friedhof der

Ernst-Zinna-Weg & Landsberger Allee; exhibit 10am-6pm; 240, M5, M6, M8) is a cemetery for
the victims of the revolutionary riots in March 1848, and the Denkmal des Polnischen
Soldaten und des deutschen Antifaschisten (Memorial to the Polish Soldier and the German
Antifascist; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; cnr Virchowstrasse & Margarete-Sommer-Strasse) honours the joint
fight of Polish soldiers and German resistance against the Nazis.
