In-Depth Information
Ahoy there! This nautical kitsch tavern with an arse-kicking jukebox is anchored in an old
harbour-master's shack; it's great for quaffing and waving to the boats puttering along the
canal. Breakfast, burgers and snacks provide sustenance.

RITTER BUTZKE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.ritterbutzke.de ; Ritterstrasse 24; Fri & Sat; Moritzplatz)
Although it cut its illegal underground roots long ago, Ritter Butzke has hardly gone main-
stream. This labyrinthine fixture on the Berlin house and electro party circuit has three
floors and lots of dark nooks and crannies inside a former lamp factory, which mostly
wrinkle-free hotties invade for extended dance-floor jams.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
A 'ROYAL' GARDEN FOR THE PEOPLE
Urban gardening is taking root all over the world, and in Berlin a site on Moritzplatz
that sat abandoned in the shadow of the Berlin Wall for over 60 years has been trans-
formed into one of these delightful oases, the Prinzessinnengarten (Princess Gardens;
MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.prinzessinnengarten.net ; Prinzenstrasse 35-38, Moritzplatz; 11am-6pm Apr-
Oct; Moritzplatz) . In 2009, founders Robert Shaw and Marco Clausen inspired a small
army of volunteers to help turn wasteland into an urban farm. It's become a bright
and thriving space where volunteers get their hands dirty planting and tending more
than 400 varieties of organic herbs, vegetables and flowers grown in raised compost
beds without pesticides or fertilisers. If you want to help, simply show up between
3pm and 6pm on Thursdays or 11am and 2pm on Saturdays. Meals prepared with the
crops are served in the Gartencafe ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; mains €5-8; lunch noon-3pm, din-
ner 6-10pm Apr-Oct, weather permitting; Moritzplatz) . There are also workshops on gardening,
beekeeping and sustainable living, and activities for kids. A flea market takes place
every second Sunday of the month.
Although the gardens' long-term future is by no means certain, a 2012 attempt to
sell the grounds to developers was thwarted thanks to the support of more than
30,000 people. Negotiations with the district government over a long-term lease were
underway at the time of writing.
