IN GASTRO HEAVEN: MARKTHALLE NEUN
As the name implies, Markthalle Neun ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 030-577 094 661;
www.markthalleneun.de ; Eisenbahnstrasse 42/43; 5-10pm Thu, 10am-6pm Fri & Sat; Görlitzer
Bahnhof) was the ninth (of a total of 14) market hall built in Berlin in the late 19th cen-
tury. It did a roaring trade for decades but over time succumbed to competition from
supermarkets, eventually becoming the haunt of tacky discount stores. In 2009 a
group of dedicated locals banded together to revive the grand iron-beam-supported
hall and turn it into an international food temple for local and regional producers. On
market days (Friday and Saturday 10am to 6pm) you can stock up on apples from
Brandenburg, baked goods from Neukölln and vegetables from a local urban garden
collective. A few permanent kitchens provide sustenance such as sandwiches from
the much-lauded Big Stuff Smoked BBQ and smoked fish from Glut & Späne.
The best time to visit is during SStreet F
d Thuursdday, when the historic market hall
gets mobbed by hungry hipsters keen on a first-class culinary journey at economy
prices. From 5pm to 10pm, a changing cast of 20 or so amateur or semipro chefs set
up their food stalls to serve delicious street food from all corners of the world. It's an
exotic smorgasbord that might feature New Zealand meat pies, Taiwanese burgers,
Argentine pulled pork sandwiches, Korean tacos or Vietnamese steamed pork buns.
Pick your favourite, grab a seat at a communal table and chow down with a glass of
wine or pint of Heidenpeters' Thirsty Lady pale ale, a yummy craft beer brewed right
on the premises.

It's green, ornate, a century old and…it used to be a toilet. Now it's a burger joint beneath
the elevated U-Bahn tracks. Don't fret, don't shudder: the plump all-beef patties are tops
(try the Meisterburger with fried onions, bacon and barbecue sauce) and great with fries and
homemade dips such as peanut and mango curry.
