; Sophienstrasse 18;
Wein-
meisterstrasse, Hackescher Markt)
Back in the 1990s, Sascha Waltz transformed the Sophiensaele into Berlin's number-one
spot for experimental and avant-garde dance. Dance is still big, but the program now ex-
tends to contemporary theatre, music and performance art, often presented by young artists
exploring nonconventional concepts and new forms of expression.

Nonconformist, radical and provocative: performances at the 'People's Stage' are not for the
squeamish. Since 1992, the theatre has been led by enfant terrible Frank Castorf who regu-
larly tears down the confines of the proscenium stage with Zeitgeist-critical productions that
manage to be both populist and elitist at once.

ger Tor, M1)
Europe's largest revue theatre has a tradition going back to the 1920s and is famous for
glitzy-glam Vegas-style productions with leggy showgirls, a high-tech stage, mind-boggling
special effects and plenty of artistry.
